“The tale of the unknown island” of José Saramago brings artists Enrique Tomás (Spain), Stefaan van Biesen (Belgium) and Geert Vermeire (Belgium / Brazil) the production of a collaborative work.

An interactive technology, developed specifically for this installation by Enrique Tomás in collaboration with the University FH ÖO of Austria, allows to become part of a 360 ° soundscape and visual experience, which changes with the orientation of the listener sitting on a swirling chair. All with 3D audio with spatial properties due to the use of binaural and ambisonics recordings.

Four natural soundscapes by Enrique Tomás represent four environments fairytale and sound following the movement of the listener.
These speakers reproduce audio content are mixed in an organic way, depending on where you are listening.

The experience takes place in a dialogue with the projection of multiple videos, poems and songs, created for this installation by Stefaan van Biesen and Geert Vermeire.

The flow of the text Saramago is rewritten in a stream of sound and images, activated by a person in a swivel chair as a symbol of man’s search, and transformed into a travel experience to an inner world through empathy.
The work of artists of this facility connects with the typical approach of Jose Saramago, always in search of a public awareness by investigating and recreating situations that question the anxieties and hopes of humanity.
Geert Vermeire and Stefaan van Biesen (such as the collective principle Milena) has collaborated with Enrique Tomas in several projects linking literature and new media. Including geolocation, handling technology, literary applications for portable screens (smartphones, tablets, GPS) to among others, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent (Belgium), the National Museum in Belgrade (Serbia), Museum Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (Germany) Deichtorhallen Museum of Hamburg (Germany), Musée des Beaux Arts in Brussels (Belgium). “

“El Ángel” es el título del nuevo proyecto de Escoitar.org para La Casa Encendida, un paseo sonoro geolocalizado que promueve un encuentro con las fuerzas del mal a través de la experiencia acústica (audioguías interactivas, psicogeografía y auralidad aumentada). Para El Ángel se ha programado la aplicación noTours (escrita en entorno Android), que combinada con el hardware diseñado especialmente para esta ocasión (GPS+Brújula Digital y la incorporación de audio 3D -binaural y ambisónico) permitirá una experiencia sensorial al servicio de la idea de Ángel Caído de la literatura clásica (y de la propia Biblia), que ahora vaga errante por El Retiro de Madrid.

Según las leyendas más conocidas, después de la Primera Guerra en el Cielo, muchos ángeles fueron expulsados, convirtiéndose así en ángeles caídos. El ángel caído más reconocido por la historia es Lucifer; aunque esta palabra nunca se usa para referirse a un ángel caído dentro de la Biblia. Una de las pocas estatuas del mundo que hacen referencia a este ser está en los Jardines del Parque de El Retiro. Esa será la clave de este paseo sonoro que Escoitar.org propone.

Hace unos días el Ángel Caído representado en la estatua, bello, con alas desplegadas y contorsionado, consiguió liberarse de las serpientes diabólicas que enroscaban su cuerpo. Este hermoso y aterrador ser, con rostro crispado por su grito de desesperación, ha dejado de mirar al cielo con recelo, ha esquivado el rayo que pretendía partirlo y ahora vaga errante por El Retiro, con sus alas abiertas, buscando al paseante.

Se manifiesta a través del sonido y esa “Caja de Pandora” que los visitantes llevarán en sus manos (las audioguías noTours) son la puerta que le dará vida, su espacio para manifestarse. Él y su séquito de moscas entregarán las claves para resolver un misterio; hablará con el visitante, le susurrará al oído, tratará de poseerte. Sólo existe un modo de evitar esta infeliz tragedia: resolviendo el acertijo.

Rotterdam Soundscapes

360º Soundscapes is a sound installation based on a particular interface that makes possible to enjoy a 360º degrees soundscape that changes with listener´s orientation.

How the installation started in 2009

During October and November 2009 I enjoyed an Artist in Residence period at Foundation b.a.d. in Rotterdam.

For the final presentation  I decided to show four new electronic compositions in an installation format . The particular interface that I did (a spinning chair) makes possible to enjoy a 360º degrees soundscape that changes with listener´s orientation. All the audio has 3D spatial properties due to the use of binaural and ambisonic recordings.

For the composition  I recorded many hours at natural soundscapes of the city of Rotterdam. Each composition is about some aspect of the city:

1. The first composition arrived from the fact that the Laurens Church was resonating due to the vibrations coming from massive construction that is being built in Blaak.  I recorded that low frequency drone and other particular sounds inside of the Church. It reflects the specific atmosphere of non-Catholic churches: openness, happiness, etc.

2. Rotterdam Corner is a composition made out of sound field recordings in one corner of the city of Rotterdam. The specific synchronized rhythm of the events that were happening suggested me the idea of creating a work based on an internal beat, always present although very loud sounds cover it continously.

3. Blaak Market is a real binaural experience in Rotterdam´s Blaak Market. My first idea was composing a derivate work from the recordings but finally I decided to leave it as it is. I only edited some levels. A multicultural air is quite present due to the many different languajes and their different ways of  intonation. The internal life of the market provides us a good composition by itself.

4. Travelling Rotterdam is a compostion based on the idea of movement. Every day Rotterdam´s people travel many kilometers by bike, crossing the Maas River within a dedicated bike tunnel or taking the train in Centraal Station. I recorded some specific points of the city where people use to transit, but focusing on the sensations that they have while travelling, not like an external actor.

360º Soundscapes in 2010 – Exhibition in Traun Gallery (Austria)

I received an invitation to exhibit in the Gallery of the city of Traun (Austria). It is a space of 240 sqm that was shared together with the artist Ursula Guttmann.

In that exhibition I showed seven works and one was another 360º soundscapes composed with recordings of Traun.

On Friday 27th, Saturday 28th and Sunday the 29th of November, the artist initiatives Duende, Stichting B.a.d, Kaus Australis, Stichting Kunst & Complex and Het Wilde Weten are opening their doors to allow the public a glimpse into the studios of more than 20 international artists who are temporarily in residence in Rotterdam. Throughout the weekend you are invited to attend a wide-ranging programme of exhibitions, performances, artist talks, workshops, dinners and parties at five different venues.

RESUMEN DEL PROYECTO

Peer2Peer es un proyecto original de Enrique Tomás en colaboración con Ursula Guttmann para la producción de una criatura artificial que posea una personalidad y comportamiento emocional. El objetivo del proyecto es la investigación en vias artísticas de comunicación emocional (no cognitiva) entre máquinas y humanos.

Esta comunicación es un tú a tú (Peer2Peer), un bucle cerrado emocional entre persona y máquina en el que ambos se ven afectados por el otro y en el que cada uno tiene sus propias espectativas y tomas sus propias decisiones emocionales.

El resultado del proyecto es una instalación en la que el público podrá tocar a la criatura, al tiempo que la criatura crea un feedback inmediato, creando un espacio para la comunicación por medio de emociones.

Para desarrollar el proyecto se ha producido una forma textil abstracta de piel natural y silicona, capaz de percibir estímulos táctiles y sonoros asi como de producir respuestas emocionales a nivel táctil y sonoro.

Fantasmarama is a media art exhition in Linz during Ars Electronica where our work Peer2Peer (Ursula Guttmann and Enrique Tomás) will be exhibited.

Peer2Peer is a new work based on tactile communications. A longer post is needed for this new work but I didn´t have time for documentation yet. It will arrive soon.
